“In early 2017, a young teenage girl eager to start her acting journey was given the amazing opportunity of a year long scholarship of acting classes, mentoring, and coaching through Girls with Grit. At my time at Girls with Grit I was able to acquire many valuable skills that have fueled me in my acting journey to this day. Through the classes taken at Armstrong I was able to acquire the understanding and skills of an audition process. The instructors were patient and took their time in guiding me in the right direction of delivering a performance that contains immensely strong choices. The private coachings that were afforded to me gave me a more specific set of skills that layered my performances with more specificity. It ironed out the specific concerns I had in giving performances that was not able or too shy to ask my instructor. It allowed me to keep my acting muscles warm while classes were on standby, constantly exercising and challenging my knowledge of the craft outside of the classroom. The most important thing I learned through this program was self compassion for my work. Oftentimes when you're starting a new journey that you care so much about it's easy to be extremely harsh on oneself, especially as a young black girl. When the one on one sessions, and my worries were communicated the forgiving and understanding energy emulated was very encouraging. It taught me that mistakes are ok in making optimal growth not only in your acting journey but in anything you do, something very important to know. Often in this industry it is thought that we are all in competition, it is often forgotten that this a beautiful community conveying the humanity of one another that is often brushed off in day by day society. It gave to me the support system I need to continue feeding the hunger I have for my craft until this very day. I am very thankful with my journey through Girls with Grit, and I am sure any future candidate will feel the same.”
